NABS 5-a-Side Football

Held this year on 22nd June 2008

Wembley Goals Soccer Centre

Ninety-nine teams from across the communications industry forgot the disappointment of the home nations’ failure to qualify for a small, insignificant football tournament apparently taking place in Europe at the same timeand spent Sunday 22nd June at Wembley Goals getting down to the serious business of the NABS 5-a-Side football tournament – the largest one-day 5-a-Side tournament in the UK.

Competition was fierce in the North-West London sunshine as the teams representing every sector of the industry battled their way through the group stage ready for the tension to increase for the 32 teams who went through to the knock-out rounds.

Miroma Group and Vizeum met in the final for the Cup with Miroma Group winning the trophy.  The Plate (contested by the runners up from the group stages) was won by Inferno who beat Global Radio in a closely fought final – both finals in fact were so close that, in true England international style, they were won following a penalty shootout.

A separate ladies' competition was every bit as competitive as the men’s tournament and also attracted an impressive number of spectators.  Seven teams took part, with the final being played between Iris and Titan Outdoor.  The ladies from Iris came out as the winners, having fielded a truly international team, with players from Brazil, New Zealand, Ireland, Australia, Denmark and … Essex!  Their kit came all the way from Brazil, sourced from one of the player’s hometowns.

Mimi Lazarus from Iris was named as the Player of the Tournament for the Ladies, with Nick Halas from Vizeum taking the honours for the men.
